Review: A Beautiful Dark by Jocelyn Davies

Title: A Beautiful Dark
Author: Jocelyn Davies
Publisher: HarperTeen

Date Published: September 27th 2011

Summary:
On the night of Skye’s seventeenth birthday, she meets two enigmatic strangers. Complete opposites—like fire and ice—Asher is dark and wild, while Devin is fair and aloof. Their sudden appearance sends Skye’s life into a tailspin. She has no idea what they want, or why they seem to follow her every move—only that their presence coincides with a flurry of strange events. Soon she begins to doubt not just the identity of the two boys, but also the truth about her own past.
In the dead of a bitingly cold Colorado winter, Skye finds herself coming to terms with the impossible secret that threatens to shatter her world. Torn between Asher, who she can’t help falling for, and Devin, who she can’t stay away from, the consequences of Skye’s choice will reach further than the three of them could ever imagine.

Review: The summary of A Beautiful Dark is very intriguing; it captivates a reader right off the bat. After reading the short summary, I couldn't wait to sit down and read so that I could learn more about Skye and the choices in which she would eventually have to make.

From the very beginning, I was pulled in. I wanted to know more about this teenager named Skye, and the reason that she was living with her Aunt Jo. I wanted to know more about her friends, especially Ian ;-) and as time went on I wanted to learn more and more about the two boys who had taken precedent in her life. The author, Jocelyn Davis does a tremendous job at giving subtle hints into a character's future, only to be taken off-guard by another event that intercedes. She also leaves details about Jocelyn's life open, so that the reader is drawn more into the book- curious- as to why certain events in her life have occurred.

Let's talk about the characters...
Skye is this sweet teenager who is living her normal life, or what she's grown accustomed to as being "normal." Her friends are tons of fun- I really loved the dialogue between Skye and her best friend Cassie who is fun, flirty and outgoing. And even though Ian isn't so lucky at getting a chance with Skye, I loved his personality and I would like his character to play a little more of a role in the next book... guess we will have to wait and see!

Mysterious... that's what girls want in a guy right? well, in this case YES! oh my goodness the personality of Asher and Devin, so called cousins, are dark and mysterious with a side of sweetness! Who could NOT fall for them? Asher and Devin share a secret one in which affects not only their lives, but they reveal a secret about Skye herself that not even she knows about. Once this secret is out, Skye has to make decisions unlike any she's ever had to decide upon before- and some are out of her control.

Everything begins to fall apart when another girl, Raven, someone who is familiar to Devin and Asher but is new to Skye (for all she knows at least) enters the picture. Raven gave me the creeps! haha Very cold-hearted, but at the same time I  had to realize that she didn't always have a choice in her decisions.

I loved this book- but I will say that I didn't feel as though all the ideas were "fresh"... that's not a bad thing, as I said before I really enjoyed reading A Beautiful Dark. Jocelyn took the idea of paranormal teen romance and everything that a reader loves about that genre and combined it into a well written novel.

Oh.. and I'm not the always a fan of cliffhangers. Mainly because I'm impatient and want to know more right away. Well, Bravo! Jocelyn, you've captured this reader into wanting to find out more RIGHT NOW! lol

A Beautiful Dark is an ideal novel for any teenager who is looking for a sweet book but one that also has a suspenseful storyline with several plot twists!
