Review: When I first received this book, the synopsis was truly engaging. So little was said, and that made me want to read this book right away!

One of the many things I love about reading a new book is having it be so different from anything I have read before. I tend to compare books a lot when I read, so it was nice to read this book with an open mind. I know the author, Meredith Moore was inspired by Charles Dickens's Great Expectations, which I sadly have not read. But after reading this, I will for sure be picking that up.

What I enjoyed about this book was the protagonist, Vivian Foster. At first she really annoyed me, but as time went on I grew to love her. Reading from her point of view really showed how difficult her life was. The mental abusive she encountered was heartbreaking, but then you reconized how much her mother manipulated her over the years. Vivian became numb to emotions, besides being hostile to the people around her. She didn't know how to love, or how to be loved. The simple act of kindess was something she had to reach within her, but deep down it was there.

Even though I can't personally relate to this character, I know at some point in all of our lives, someone out there has made us feel worthless. But it's how we bounce back from it that truly measures who we are as people. That's what I loved about Vivian, she was so strong through it all, and I admire that a lot.

I also really adored Ben, he was so kind and brought an innocence to the story.

To be honest, I was worried with how the story was going to unfold. There were a few slow moments that I found myself wanting to just pass through. But once secrets started to get answered, and pieces were connecting, I was really invested with the story. Towards the end, I couldn't stop turning the page!

Overall, this debut novel is a corrupt and haunting story that will leave you wanting more!
