Book Review and Giveaway: Jodi Picoult The Storyteller

Name: The Storyteller
Author: Jodi Picoult
Publisher: Hodder

Summary: Sage Singer befriends an old man who's particularly beloved in her community. Josef Weber is everyone's favorite retired teacher and Little League coach. They strike up a friendship at the bakery where Sage works. One day he asks Sage for a favor: to kill him. Shocked, Sage refuses…and then he confesses his darkest secret - he deserves to die, because he was a Nazi SS guard. Complicating the matter? Sage's grandmother is a Holocaust survivor.

What do you do when evil lives next door? Can someone who's committed a truly heinous act ever atone for it with subsequent good behavior? Should you offer forgiveness to someone if you aren't the party who was wronged? And most of all - if Sage even considers his request - is it murder, or justice?

Review: Now this is my first Jodi Picoult read and it has been a long time coming. I dare say this won't be my last. I have seen the film My Sister's Keeper, and I have asked for the book many times but still haven't received it. I already want to read that and The Pact. As much as I have loved finally devouring a Jodi Picoult book, I will be reading them sparingly as Jodi covers a number of difficult yet ever so real subjects. So I would not be able to read too many together without going crazy or becoming a little depressed.
Throughout reading this lengthy novel I was well and truly addicted and intrigued to find out what happened next. The Holocaust is real and it's a subject matter that had an impact on a lot of lives.
A sad, yet real story that will have you eager to know more. I like the fact that Jodi has different voices for the different characters as well as flashbacks, bringing the reader right into the front line of the story. Sage instantly became one of my favourite voices, she really doesn't realise how remarkable and brave she is. She has lived most of her life feeling like she doesn't deserve to be happy, to be loved...until she starts to realise that actually that is exactly what she deserves.

Another thing I really liked was no matter how sure you thought you were on the outcome there was bound to be a change. Whenever I thought I could no longer be shocked I was shocked sideways.
The biggest twist of the story made perfect sense all along. I would definitely recommend The Storyteller and I am pleased to announce that I have two copies up for grabs. Why do you deserve one of those copies?

Book Review: Teardrop By Lauren Kate

Name: Teardrop
Author: Lauren Kate
Publisher: Double Day/ Random House

Summary: Never, ever cry... Seventeen-year-old Eureka won't let anyone close enough to feel her pain. After her mother was killed in a freak accident, the things she used to love hold no meaning. She wants to escape, but one thing holds her back: Ander, the boy who is everywhere she goes, whose turquoise eyes are like the ocean. And then Eureka uncovers an ancient tale of romance and heartbreak, about a girl who cried an entire continent into the sea. Suddenly her mother's death and Ander's appearance seem connected, and her life takes on dark undercurrents that don't make sense. Can everything you love be washed away?

Review: Firstly, this review should have been finished and posted ages ago. But I have been racking my brain with how to do it justice. Which is exactly what I said to Lauren Kate herself when I attended the Bluewater signing. I can safely say that as soon as I know when I can get a copy of the next instalment, I will be well and truly booking a well needed and deserved day off work. Now I know that sounds rather dramatic but this book will tug so many different emotions that you'll need time to process it without any interruptions.
When I first started reading Teardrop I was thinking OMG! what a weirdo stalker in regards to Ander. However, when the story continues you cannot help but fall in love with the seed-bearer. There is just something mysterious about him, and when you realise just how much he cares for Eureka deep down you cannot help but sigh and fall in love. There are sooo many twists in connection to a number of the characters, things you would never guess and I WILL not be spoiling those twists. As I want you to fully appreciate this novel you have to go in with a clear mind and embrace Eureka and Ander's strange yet beautiful story.

I quite quickly became addicted and intrigued by Eureka and Ander's story. It started strangely but as time went on I began to fall in love with both of the main characters. There is dialogue from both sides which gives you an over view of both characters. As Teardrop ends you'll be feeling soooo many emotions and counting down the days until the next book.

These are a few of the pictures of Me and Lauren at Waterstones Bluewater in December 2013.

I cannot thank Lauren enough for the time she gives to her fans and for the awesome stories that she writes. I am hoping to have read The Betrayal Of Natalie Hargrove before Lauren returns to the UK again, as that is the only one of her books I have NOT read. As you can imagine I am eagerly awaiting the next instalment in the Teardrop trilogy and I know I will be distraught when it ends.

Guest Review: The Dark Inside By Rupert Wallis

Name: The Dark Inside
Author: Rupert Wallis
Release Date: 30th January 2014
Summary: When thirteen-year-old James discovers a homeless man in an abandoned house, the course of his life changes dramatically. Hoping to find a 'cure' for a dark curse inflicted on the homeless man, the pair embark on a journey together not knowing that what they discover will impact them both in ways they never imagined.

Review: In The Dark Inside wasn’t the story I expected it to be, but then the synopsis really doesn’t do the book justice. This story is eerie, unpredictable and full of subtle nuances and depth.

Two very different characters are drawn together by their unhappy situations and desire to escape. James is a young boy living an unhappy life with his stepfather after the death of his mother, and Webster is on the run from some very scary fairground people trying to take advantage of his ‘curse’. Despite their differences, notably age, they seem to be kindred spirits and throughout the story they both look out for each other and try to find a cure. I loved their relationship and felt they absolutely belonged with each other, and although they were complete strangers they made the best family.

The other characters in the story, particularly Billie and his mother (only ever known as ‘the old woman’) felt very real - the old woman with her scary wooden doll and witchy ways really spooked me out.

I found the narrative style a little unusual to get used to in places as the third person perspective jumped from one character to another from paragraph to paragraph. Whilst it meant that I never felt that intimacy of knowing one character inside out, I think it suited the story. It allowed my feelings towards some characters to change as I gained insight into the minds of some of the more evil characters and saw that they might not all be purely bad.

Wallis’ writing was wonderfully descriptive and evoked real sinister and dark atmospheres without being heavy handed. The paranormal, magical elements of the story didn’t dominate, and some elements were even left open for you to question whether they were real or not. I liked the uncertainty and questions left unanswered even at the end; it means that each reader can interpret the story in their own way.

The Dark Inside is a mysterious dark tale of hope, faith, family and trust.

Thanks to the fantastic Hannah for this awesome review, at present she is just guest reviewing but her blog is www.hannahmariska.blogspot.com. Hopefully we'll be having Hannah back here soon.

I've never read Harry Potter.

Hello Hayley here!
Yes! You did read the title to this blog post correctly.
I have never read any of J K Rowling's Harry Potter and I haven't seen any of the films. It's not that I've never wanted to read about the young wizard it's just one phenomenon that has passed me by.
The reason I am telling you all of this is because as a book worm many people gasp when I admit that I have not read them. At the moment my best friend is working her way through the books, I think she's on book four.

Another reason I wanted to post this was to see what you guys have to say on these novels and whether I should get my teeth into them.
In September I shall be going to New York and Florida and whilst in Florida I know Emma wants to visit Harry Potter world or whatever it is called.

So tell me why should I grab for these books?????

Waiting On Wednesday

So I thought it was about time Waiting On Wednesday returned to Dark Readers, this is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine

What book are you waiting on Wednesday for?

Falling Apart is the sequel to A Vampire State Of Mind.

Summary from Choc Lit Books: In the mean streets of York, the stakes just got higher – and even pointier. Jessica Grant liaises with Otherworlders for York Council so she knows that falling in love with a vampire takes a leap of faith. But her lover Sil, the City Vampire in charge of Otherworld York, he wouldn’t run out on her, would he? He wouldn’t let his demon get the better of him. Or would he? Sil knows there’s a reason for his bad haircut, worse clothes and the trail of bleeding humans in his wake. If only he could remember exactly what he did before someone finds him and shoots him on sight. With her loyalties already questioned for defending zombies, the Otherworlders no one cares about, Jess must choose which side she’s on, either help her lover or turn him in. Human or Other? Whatever she decides, there’s a high price to pay – and someone to lose.

I truly loved A Vampire State Of Mind and in reading that I also thought it was a standalone. Which could have worked well but I am glad there is another instalment. A Vampire State Of Mind is a book that I read when nothing seemed to grab my attention this book hooked me from the very first page. I have read a few of Jane Lovering's offerings and have had many a mad chat on Twitter.
I am glad to have found her and watch this space as she will be guesting soon. Jane Lovering reviews: A Vampire State Of Mind http://www.dark-readers.com/2013/05/book-review-vampire-state-of-mind-by.html

Book Review: Splintered by A.G Howard

Name: Splintered
Author: A.G Howard
Release date: OUT NOW
Summary: This stunning debut captures the grotesque madness of a mystical under-land, as well as a girl’s pangs of first love and independence. Alyssa Gardner hears the whispers of bugs and flowers—precisely the affliction that landed her mother in a mental hospital years before. This family curse stretches back to her ancestor Alice Liddell, the real-life inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alyssa might be crazy, but she manages to keep it together. For now.
When her mother’s mental health takes a turn for the worse, Alyssa learns that what she thought was fiction is based in terrifying reality. The real Wonderland is a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on. There, Alyssa must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alice’s tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to fix Alice’s mistakes and save her family. She must also decide whom to trust: Jeb, her gorgeous best friend and secret crush, or the sexy but suspicious Morpheus, her guide through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of his own

Review: This book is crazy, Weird, addicting and beautifully written.
From the beginning this novel felt different... It made me feel on edge a bit. This is no fairytale.... Alice in wonderland just got edgier, cooler, darker and even more exciting.
Literally this is one of the best fantasy books I've read. I've loved Alice in Wonderland since I was little... And to find a book that uses the story but changes in such a way, that it could blow your mind is so fantastic.

A.G Howard's writing is so mesmerizing and addicting. I felt like I was in the book. I felt every emotion Alyssa was feeling. The written imagery is beautiful. Not at all two dimensional. I felt like I was watching a movie. The characters in this novel are so refreshing! I loved Alyssa. I've never come across someone like her before. She's strange, brave, confused and determined. She's a beautiful read.
Then there's Jeb. Jeb is so cool. Why? Well the guy is brave, sexy, funny and passionate... Everything us readers want in a lead male.

Then Morpheus. I bet he was named after the greek god of dreams. Why? Because I swear I wouldn't mind him visiting my dreams at night! The strange blue headed man with killer eyes and a few hats I wouldn't mind wearing. If you love a great fantasy with cakes, talking bugs and flowers, but also just a fantastic addicting story then pick up Splintered. Like the king in Alice in wonderland said said "Begin at the beginning, and go on till you come to the end: then stop." - because it's so worth it

Ebook Review: Teardrop short: The Last Day Of Love By Lauren Kate

Name: A Teardrop Story: The Last Day Of Love
Author: Lauren Kate

Summary: Don't miss this beautiful original digital story by Lauren Kate, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Fallen series, set in the romantic world of Teardrop, a place of  devastating secrets and dark magic . . . a world where everything you love can be washed away.

Review: Now there is a reason why this review is being posted before the actual Teardrop review. If you get a chance to read this before devouring the first in this breath-taking trilogy then you really must. I didn't really have a choice as this short wasn't available when I got stuck into Ander and Eureka's story.

The Last Day Of Love is Anders story, from his POV. In reading this you get to understand a bit more about the troubled guy. For me this gave me a great insight into why he is the way he is in Teardrop. It makes you realise just how cruel families can be thanks to tradition.
This short story just added to the admiration and love I have for Lauren Kate's writing and this fantastic trilogy.

The Last Day Of Love can be devoured very quickly I started it on the way to work and had practically finished by the end of my lunch break. I loved this addition to the trilogy and I hope Lauren will do another from Eureka at a later date. I cannot wait for the next installment.

My actual Teardrop review will hopefully follow this post in a day or so.

Hey guys so today I decided to base my Looks On Books meme on the amazing novel A BREATH OF FROST by ALYXANDRA HARVEY.

Summary: Emma Day and her two cousins, Gretchen and Penelope, are uninterested in their debutante lives. All the boring balls, tiresome curtsying and polite conversation leave much to be desired. Then a girl is found dead, frost clinging to her lifeless body, and the murder is traced to Emma. As their world is turned upside down, Emma discovers more about herself and her cousins, from her connection to the murders to the secrets of her family legacy. Now the girls must embrace their true Lovegrove inheritance in order to stop the chaos, even if that means risking their lives. Dangerously handsome Cormac Fairfax wants to help Emma – but, with secrets of his own to hide,
can she trust him?

This was so fun to make. I wanted to make a snow flake effect. The things you will need:

1. White & Purple face paint
3. Black Mascara
4. Beige lipstick
5. Paint Brush
6. Silver glitter liquid liner
7. Foundation (colour that matches you)
8. Small face sponge

1. Apply some foundation you would usually use on a day to day basis (if you do)

2. Get your sponge dab into the white face paint and then apply around your eye and half way down your cheek. You only want half of your face white.

3. Dip your paint brush into the purple face paint and start to do a spike effect like in the picture from the corner of your eye

4. Add some mascara to your lashes. Make it really thick so your eyes pop.

5. Add some foundation or white face paint on your lips.

6. Along the purple lines add some glitter liquid liner to them to give it a shine.

DR MAKEUP - LOOKS ON BOOKS #7 - BANISHED BY LIZ DE JAGER

Hey guys so today I decided to base my Looks On Books meme on the amazing novel BANISHED by LIZ DE JAGER. The amazing debut.

Summary: Kit is proud to be a Blackhart, now she’s encountered her unorthodox cousins and their strange lives. And her home-schooling now includes spells, fighting enemy fae and using ancient weapons. But it’s not until she rescues a rather handsome fae prince, fighting for his life on the edge of Blackhart Manor, that her training really kicks in. With her family away on various missions, Kit must protect Prince Thorn, rely on new friends and use her own unfamiliar magic to stay ahead of Thorn’s enemies. As things go from bad to apocalyptic, fae battle fae in a war that threatens to spill into the human world. Then Kit pits herself against the Elder Gods themselves – it’s that or lose everyone she’s learnt to love

This was so fun to make. The things you will need:

1. White & Black liquid Liner

Review: Now it's no secret that I am a fan of Carole Matthews. Not only does she write awesome novels. She has also written a fair few fantastic Christmas reads and Christmas shorts. This is the second Christmas short that I've read and I was not disappointed. Carole has a way with words and it's quite evident her love for Christmas. Hannah is an adorable character who I instantly fell in love with. Sadly, she met a man that ended up treating her badly and leaving her broken-hearted. In thinking and reminiscing about her lost love Hannah discovers that her lost love was not worth her tears. An awesome short tale that will have your heart in your mouth, now I really do hope Carole writes a longer read featuring the loveable Hannah and the dashing Connor again. A girl can only hope.

Book Review: Wish Upon A Star By Trisha Ashley

Name: Wish Upon A Star
Author: Trisha Ashley
Publisher: Avon

Summary: The perfect gift isn’t always under the tree…

Single mum Cally’s life is all about her little girl Stella. She’s resigned to the fact that the only romance she’s going to get is from the rom-coms she watches, and with her busy job and her daughter, she doesn’t have time to even think about love.
But life gets very tough when Stella gets sick. Balancing her job as a recipe writer and looking after Stella is all consuming, so when Cally meets handsome baker Jago the last thing she wants to do is fall in love, especially when she’s been badly burned by a Prince Charming from her past. Can laid-back, charming Jago unlock Cally’s frozen heart and help her find true love and magic under the mistletoe?

Review: Now I know Christmas has just come and gone but I have to put up a few of my festive reviews. As I whole-heartedly fell in love with a few stories and Wish Upon A Star was one of those stories.
Now I am about to admit something that I am kind of ashamed of. Wish Upon A Star is the first full length book I have read of Trisha Ashley's. I have read a few shorts and I am pretty sure there is at least one of her books in my to be read pile. But having said that after this festive beauty I am well and truly a fan and I shall be reading her back catalogue throughout the year. I know she has a fair few other festive reads so come October/November of 2014 I shall be getting stuck into those, and I must say I cannot wait.

What I love about Wish Upon A Star is that it's very real and there are many families out there who love Christmas but there are more important things happening in the lives. In reading this I instantly fell in love with Cally and the very adorable Stella. Stella is a beautiful child who needs a heart operation in order to live a normal life. She is a fragile three-year-old and poor Cally goes out of her mind trying to keep her well and to do what's best for her little girl.

One thing I did like but I also hated was the cakes and recipes. If you are dieting do not read this book although if you are dieting at Christmas time there is seriously something wrong. I love the friendship that blossoms between Cally and Jago as they are two beautiful people who have unfortunately met two awful people previously. What is also quite beautiful is the relationship between Jago and Stella- it's so adorable. I love everything about this festive read, the build-up to Christmas, the twists and turns between Cally and Jago, their disastrous ex's and the beauty of community spirit of Sticklepond.
The sad thing is there aren't that many communities that come together like this one but it does make me think that Christmas time really should be a time of giving to others, and helping those less fortunate than ourselves. Just before Christmas I Christmas wrapped for Make A Wish Foundation- giving a few hours of my time back and I felt awesome for doing so. I also met some inspirational people and also some people who had benefited from the charity. I am sure I will make time to do the same again this year.

For me this is the perfect Christmas treat, accompanied by a hot chocolate and some biscuits tuck into this festive treat with a beautiful ending. I'm not going to lie I really do hope Trisha writes another festive beauty with these characters.

Happy New Year

Hello Hayley here! Long time no speak and a very happy new year to you all.
Let's hope 2014 is a fantastic year for all of us.

I am soo sooo sorry for the lack of posts. Myself and Casey were both chatting the other day about our lack of posts and updates and we can only apologise for that.

Casey is doing amazingly well with her book tubing. Have you had a chance to check out her fantastic Book Tube site???? If not pop over and check her out at www.youtube.com/thebitterproductions

So in the mean time I shall be looking after all things Dark Readers but I am sure Casey will pop in from time to time. I hope so as I'm sure you guys will miss her just as much as I will.

What can I say? Well I am aiming to get a fair few reviews up as well as some guest reviews and hopefully a few authors. Plus I am looking to be consistent with these hello updates from me.
How does that sound???

2013 saw some pretty impressive books come out a few of my favourites were....

Take A Look At Me Now By Miranda Dickinson- I have loved every single one of Miranda's novels so far. I have two to read to get me all caught up before her next book.
Take A Look At Me Now was special for me as I was part of Avon's team of early readers. In doing so I fell in love with Nell's story and all the characters connected, I have to mention Mr Rossi sigh. I also made a new friend in Kirsty who is an awesome blogger and I am hoping to get her on here soon her blog is theloveofagoodbook.wordpress.com
If you somehow missed my review on this awesome read here it is http://www.dark-readers.com/2013/10/book-review-take-look-at-me-now-by.html

Me and You By Claudia Carroll- Claudia feels like an old friend rather than just a famous and talented writer. Me And You was very different to anything else she has written (although I still have a few of her back catalogue to go through eek) but it was also very real and true to life. I was intrigued and frustrated with this book from the very first page.
I adore Claudia and this is what I had to say about Me and You http://www.dark-readers.com/2013/08/book-review-me-and-you-by-claudia.html

Teardrop By Lauren Kate- I am a sucker for Lauren Kate's writing and I am still getting over the Fallen series ending. When I first read about Teardrop I was intrigued yet unsure. When I started reading I was still dubious it's funny how a book can make you go through sooo many emotions I am desperate for the next installment and my review of this should be up either tomorrow or the day after.

WitchFall By Victoria Lamb- I love love love this series. I am so looking forward to and also dreading WitchRise but I know I will be sad as the end is near sob! Thanks to the fabulous Victoria I have another of hers from another series to read. HAYLEY GET ORGANISED WOMAN.
Here is what I wrote about WitchFall http://www.dark-readers.com/2013/09/book-review-witchfall-by-victoria-lamb.html

I have to mention the awesome Emma Mills I have truly fell in love with the WitchBlood series I still have the short novella to read but I thank Emma for including me in all her blog tours and for sending me the fantastic novels so promptly. Here's what I said about the final book WitchHunt. http://www.dark-readers.com/2013/11/book-review-and-blog-tour-witchhunt-by.html I look forward to what's next from Emma if you want UKYA then read the WitchBlood series you will not regret it.

I could honestly go on all day there were a fair few fabulous books last year. This year I plan to get more book blogger organised but I also want to read more of what I want rather than just to review. A friend of mine mentioned reading some classics and that is something I keep putting off so I think from February I will read at least one classic a month. Hmmmm now what to start with????? That is the question.

Well I would love to hear from you all. I know there are a few of you awaiting books from me, they shall be on there way shortly and I hope to organise lots more comps and giveaways in the coming months.

I can tell you that there will be a Jodi Picoult book up for grabs real soon. So watch this space.
