Waiting On Wednesday

Young Gifted & Dead By Lucy Carver
Publisher:Pan Macmillan/ Children's
Release Date: 10th October 2013

Summary:

Don't go down to the woods today . . .

You can’t get into St Jude’s Academy unless you’re gifted, talented and supremely rich. New girl Alyssa is on a scholarship and feels like an outsider - she's not even that smart, apart from her photographic memory (and that's cheating, right?). Then one day her room-mate Lily is found floating face down in the lake. It looks like suicide, but, torn apart with guilt and grief, Alyssa is convinced that things aren't as they seem. Soon a jolted memory puts her on the trail of a sinister secret that might hold the clues to Lily's suspicious death. But Alyssa is in too deep, and she's being watched . . .

The first in a brand-new YA series, perfect for fans of The Gallagher Girls.
During my placement at Pan Macmillan the lovely Amy let me read the first part of the manuscript of Young, Gifted and Dead so I could come up with some ideas for the author during the release and possible blog tours. I was immediately hooked by the story and the mystery of Lily had me on the edge of my seat begging for more. I had to tell myself to stop reading and thankfully what I wanted to read wasn't complete so I had to stop. This is going to be awesome and it seems there will be at least two books. I honestly cannot wait to devour this and I may have opted in to donning some red lipstick to help promote the book.
ARGH!!! Can I have a copy yet???? I cannot wait to get on board with this something new and fresh to get excited about...Is it October yet???

Book Review: Me and You By Claudia Carroll

Name: Me & You
Author: Claudia Carroll
Publisher: Avon
Release Date: UK 1st August 2013

Summary: I′m fine. I′m sorry. Please take care of him for me. And maybe one day I′ll get to explain.
Angie knows a lot about her best friend Kitty.
She knows Kitty is mad and wild and loves to wear clashing colours. She knows she′s incredibly funny and generous but also very unreliable.
And she knows that there is a perfect explanation for Kitty standing her up on her birthday.
She thinks she knows everything about Kitty, except she doesn't.
Kitty knows that she is the happiest she has ever been.
She knows she′s so lucky to have a lovely boyfriend, Simon and a best friend like Angie.
But what she doesn′t know is that on this night, her past is finally going to catch up with her and change everything.

Review: Have I mentioned how much I adore Claudia Carroll's books, writing and generally her as a person. I have read a few of Claudia's infectious  short stories as well as Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow and A Very Accidental Love Story. I shall make my way through her back catalogue in between my growing TBR list. I have loved each and every story Claudia has written and I have adored lots of her characters.

Me & You is a book that had me hooked and intrigued from the word go. Angie is witty, funny and just generally an easily loved character. Kitty sounds awesome but I shant say anymore as this is not going to be a huge spoiler. I may even go as far as saying my favourite book of Claudia's so far. The amount of research she must have done to make this story so REAL.
Me & You is a rather poignant tale, that has happened to many people and it will continue to happen to many people in our everyday lives. But unless it's happened or is happening to you it's not something any of us dare dream of.
This is by far the more frustrating yet intriguing books that I have ever read from anyone and definitely from Claudia's books to date. I don't want to air my original frustration as I would not want to ruin that for you the reader. This tale of friendship, heartache, love, her and abuse is soooo well thought out and as I said earlier researched. What I can say in regards to my frustrations I was sat there reading going but why and where??? constantly having different thoughts of various scenarios swimming through my mind. I will say the outcome totally through me but when I sat and thought about it, it was also partially obvious.
There are three parts to this story and each had a twist that I was not ready for. If you have read any of Claudia's novels you'll be able to hear her distinct voice throughout the text which is also heart-warming.
This story is about testing a friendship. Do you really know everything about your love ones or best friends? In some cases it's sad to say that NO we don't really know the real person beyond the persona you are given.
A truly inspiring novel that will make you think of what really matters in life. It will also make you think before you judge, appearance's can be deceiving. Some of the happiest people on the outside are the most vulnerable on the inside.

Finally all that is left for me to say is Me & You is intriguing, inspiring, infectious and just god damn beautiful. A terrifying real story, written with pure grace and the usual Claudia Carroll witt.

Guest review: Into the grey by Celine Kiernan

Name: Into The Grey
Author: Celine Kiernan
UK release: OUT NOW
UK publisher: WALKER
Summary: A pacy, chilling ghost story from the creator of the internationally acclaimed Moorehawke Trilogy.

I think the fire changed us – me and Dom. I think that’s how the boy was able to see us. Though he’d been there for every summer of our childhood, we’d only been stupid boys until then. Stupid, happy, ignorant boys. And what in hell would he have had in common with two stupid boys? But after the fire we were different. We were maybe a little bit like him. And so he saw us, at last, and he thought he’d found a home…

Review: I picked up this book on the pretence of it being a haunting ghost story; it definitely fulfilled it's promise on that front, but it was just so much more than that. Rather than focussing on the ghost story itself, I believe that this book depicts the deterioration of Patrick Finnerty as his twin brother Dominick is being slowly taken away from him by the ghost of a young boy.
Kiernan beautifully depicts in her writing the strong bond between these two twin brothers, and this makes their separation all the more tragic. You see the trauma and the confusion that Pat is having to go through, and his slow descension into despair at the hurt that he is living with alone without the rest of his family to help him. The development on this front is absolutely fantastic, as you can clearly see Pat losing his grip on everything that he knows, and this isn't something that suddenly appears; it happens through a series of events and the loss of not knowing what to do next.

With regards to the ghost story itself, some of the scenes were so incredibly haunting, that I found myself quite afraid as to what was going to happen. The tension and suspense elements of this book were timed to perfection; it wasn't over baring or too obvious and I found myself getting rather creeped out by a lot of it.
Not having read a lot of books of this genre before, I was pleasantly surprised, and would mark this as a book to start off with if you're unfamiliar with ghost stories. This is one of those books that leaves you wanting more, and it has definitely encouraged me to delve deeper into the realms of the unknown.

Book Review: Wait for you by J Lynn

Name: Wait For You
Author: J Lynn
UK publisher: Harper Collins
UK release date: 15th August
Summary: Some things are worth experiencing

‘Cam stole my heart’
‘One of the most endearing, touching and fun friends-to-lovers I’ve read’
‘Gripping … the sweetest yet hottest romance

And some things are worth fighting for …

Avery knows she should stay away from Cam Hamilton: he might be the hottest guy on campus but she really doesn’t need that sort of drama right now. Love is best left in the past – along with her troubles. But sometimes, the last thing you want, is just the thing you need

Review: This book is one of the best NAs I have read. I absolutely love this novel.  I loved the characters, the romance, the setting, the plot and just everything. I couldn't stop reading this. I read it in one sitting. J Lynn has set the bar high for new adult novels. Her writing is so sexy and addicting that I couldn't believe what I was reading.

J Lynn writing can break your heart and mend it back together again. What I loved about the characters in this book was that it wasn't the typical love at first sight. It was paced perfectly. The romance built and it was a beautiful read. I loved Cam. He is one of the sexiest male reads I have read in a long time. The way J Lynn writes his character is so good! She taps into the males mind so fantastically.

I loved Avery's character. She's such a troubled soul but such an interesting read. I feel she wasn't all two dimensional. J Lynn made her character so touching and sympathetic, but also she was fierce and an amazing read. If you love new adult books but really awesome, sexy addicting ones then get your hands on these bad boys. Abbi Glines and EL James need to watch out because J Lynn is coming for you.

Book Review: Rule (Marked men #1) By Jay Crownover

(NOT FINAL UK COVER)
Name: Rule
Author: Jay Crownover
Publishers: Harper Collins UK
UK Release date: October 24th
Summary: Shaw Landon loved Rule Archer from the moment she laid eyes on him. Rule is everything a straight--A pre-med student like Shaw shouldn’t want--and the only person she’s never tried to please. She isn’t afraid of his scary piercings and tattoos or his wild attitude. Though she knows that Rule is wrong for her, her heart just won’t listen.

To a rebel like Rule Archer, Shaw Landon is a stuck-up, perfect princess-and his dead twin brother’s girl. She lives by other people’s rules; he makes his own. He doesn’t have time for a good girl like Shaw-even if she’s the only one who can see the person he truly is.

But a short skirt, too many birthday cocktails, and spilled secrets lead to a night neither can forget. Now, Shaw and Rule have to figure out how a girl like her and a guy like him are supposed to be together without destroying their love . . . or each other

Review: A lot of people are into new adult books lately and it's become this huge thing! And if you are a fan of the genre then this book should be at the top of your list! Let me tell you why!

From the beginning of opening this book the sexual tension just oozed out of the pages between the two characters Shaw and Rule.  It was so addicting that I read it in one sitting and I haven't done that in awhile. The plot was defiantly original. I find in a lot of new adult books it repeats quite often, but this book was a breath of fresh air in the genre.

I loved the whole tattoo/piercing  themed content. Again this related to my comment about originality. I've never come across a NA with this. Every page and paragraph I just wanted to get a tattoo and a piercing in a very unconventional place! The way Jay described tattoos it was beautiful! I could close my eyes and picture all of them in detail from her words.

The scenes between Shaw and Rule were so intoxicating. I couldn't wait for their scenes each page I turned. I found their relationship so real and enjoyable it was so refreshing to read.
I think Jay is a real talent and I can see why she has had so much hype about this book. I cant believe I am only hearing and reading it now but I am so glad. Her novel is so addicting and such a page turner I didn't want it to end. I cannot wait for the next marked books. I have a feeling this series is going to be so huge in the UK.

If you love a very hot NA with tattoos, piercings, Mohawk's, and an epic couple.. Then get this book! You won't regret it!

SIMON & SCHUSTER WEEK: Abigail Haas A rom-com writer turns to the dark side…

Hello there beautiful people. Casey here and I am here today to share our Simon and Schuster week with you all. So all this week we will be featuring YA books from Simon and Schuster UK the publisher all over our blog. From guest posts from some of their awesome authors, to reviews of their books and an AWESOME giveaway at the end where you can win some of these epic books we have been featuring all week!
So without further or do here is our second post of the week. Its the awesome author Abigail Haas.

Abigail Haas novel is called Dangerous girls and its OUT NOW in the UK! its nothing like she has written before.

Heres a Summary:

It’s Spring Break of senior year. Anna, her boyfriend Tate, her best friend Elise, and a few other close friends are off to a debaucherous trip to Aruba that promises to be the time of their lives.

But when Elise is found brutally murdered, Anna finds herself trapped in a country not her own, fighting against vile and contemptuous accusations. As Anna sets out to find her friend’s killer, she discovers harsh revelations about her friendships, the slippery nature of truth, and the ache of young love.

Awaiting the judge’s decree, it becomes clear to Anna that everyone around her thinks she is not only guilty, but also dangerous. And when the whole story comes out, reality is more shocking than anyone ever imagined...

Sounds fantastic doesn't it? I think this is my next read defiantly! So Abigail is here today to do a guest post about her writing rom-com novels to actually writing something very dark;

When I first got the idea for Dangerous Girls, I was nervous and scared. Not because it was a book about murder and betrayal, but because it was something very different for me: a psychological thriller. With seven romantic comedy novels under my belt (written as Abby McDonald), I felt comfortable writing in that genre. I knew the rules, how I liked to structure the book, the kind of chatty, easy-going narrative voice that readers liked. But writing something dark and twisted? This would be a whole new challenge for me.
Luckily, Dangerous Girls was a gift of a book. Writers will tell you, some novels are like pulling teeth, while others arrive fully-formed, just waiting for you to sit down at the keyboard and write it all out. DG was like that for me: from the very first moment I thought up the idea of a girl standing trial accused of murdering her best friend, I knew I wanted it to be a complex, twisted narrative. We would jump back and forth between the trial, life back in school when they first met, and the vacation in paradise that goes horribly wrong, using police interviews and TV transcripts to shed light on different sides of the story. But the challenge with this kind of structure is that it’s like a huge, intricate puzzle. If you do it right, the pieces all slot together perfectly. If you don’t, the reader is left with one big confusing mess.
Attacking DG’s structure and plot was the most enjoyable part of the writing experience, and something totally new for me. My other books have all gone smoothly from beginning to middle to end. This time, I was jumping all over the place—but I loved it. I could use a scene from the past to shed new light on an event in the current timeline, or show the motivations behind a photograph, and then see how other people in court or TV reacted to just the image on the page. I’ve always been an outliner, plotting out the whole book before I start, but usually I leave plenty to unfold as I write the book. This time, plotting was more important than ever. With a thriller, you’re trying to drop clues and hints to the reader the whole time, so I had to know exactly what was going to happen so I could plant that trail of breadcrumbs from the start.
I also loved delving more into the darker side of relationships and personalities. My YAs have always been fairly light and upbeat; the characters all deal with emotions, but the tone is always positive and uplifting in the end: stories of self-discovery and empowerment. I love writing that kind of book because I loved reading them as a teen, but I have to admit, it was really fun to explore into the darker, twisted sides of life in Dangerous Girls. Anna and Elise’s friendship starts out positive, but soon unravels into something really dependent and claustrophobic. Throw in jealousy over Anna’s relationship with Tate, and Elise’s wild sexual antics, and suddenly, their dynamic isn’t so innocent. Writing these elements rang just as true to me as the lighter relationships: when I was a teenager, I had sweet crushes on boys, but equally, I had feelings of power, and sexual discovery, and intense emotions surrounding friendship and loss. DG let me explore the other side of teenage experience, the darker emotions we like to repress and ignore.
In the end, Dangerous Girls is one of the books I’m most proud to have written, because it represents a new challenge to me: a new way of approaching my writing, and a different style that scared me at first, but I’m glad to have experienced. Now I can’t wait to write my next dark thriller!

Thank you Abigail! thanks for giving us your time! Dangerous girls sounds amazing. We do like Dark here at Dark Readers. Welcome to the Dark side! ;)

The assassin and the princess EXCLUSIVE bridge scene

Read previous parts of this scene here: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4
“Let’s just enjoy ourselves,” Celaena said, taking a long sip of her jasmine tea, almost groaning at the sheer perfection of it, then adjusting the folds of her forest-green gown. A piece that had been made in this very shop—a fact that she was certainKavill had already noted.
The five other customers cast only a few curious glances their way before they finally left the shop in a flurry of fur cloaks, kidskin gloves, and moans about the endless winter. The slave girl never once looked up, and Celaena could have sworn that Nehemia’s hand twitched when she walked by—as if the princess had contemplated reaching for the girl, and then thought better of it.
When they were at last gone, Marta shut the curtains on the front window, lit a few more sconces, and escorted them to the silk couches before the dressing room curtains. Kavill himself bought them another ornate pot of jasmine tea, and then refilled both their cups.
After Celaena explained that Nehemia needed at least four dresses, two of them to be ball gowns, and all fit for Adarlanianroyalty, Kavill crossed his arms behind his back and paced as he inquired after the colors and fabrics that Nehemia preferred or hated, about her feelings toward low or high necklines, how much mobility she desired, and on and on until Celaena started wondering if Nehemia would snap.
But the princess just smiled at the slender man, answering him with the thick, hesitant accent she used for everyone butCelaena. And then she patiently sat through Kavill and Marta’s presentation of color, cloth, beading, and stitching. It wasn’t until Kavill and Marta went into the back—to get a sample of the blue ball gown in the window—that the princess sagged slightly.
“I think I prefer just having the royal dressmaker bring me something,” she said quietly. “This is truly what you—you enjoydoing?”
Celaena winced, but smiled. “When the mood strikes me, yes.” And now that she had the king’s gold burning a hole in her purse, she was more than happy to spend most of it. “I’ve always liked pretty things—dresses, jewelry, shoes… I suppose it’s easy to dismiss it as frivolous, but a gown like the onesKavill makes is art. It’s art, and mathematics, and economics.”
Nehemia’s brows lifted and Celaena shrugged, but turned to point to the red velvet sheath dress in the window display.
“That gown in the window—think about how Kavill had to first come up with the design, then get the measurements just right to match the image in his head, then find the right vendor to supply the perfect red velvet and black lace. Think about where that velvet and lace came from—the velvet from the port in Meah, the lace from Melisande, the thread that holds the whole thing together from a spinner in Fenharrow. Think about where the dyes for the red and the black came from, too—think about all the people and places that had a hand in that dress coming together. It’s like a map of the continent, and every part of it tells a story, and—” Celaena trailed off and snorted. “Well, map and story aside, it’s also pretty as hell.”
Nehemia chuckled quietly. “I think I’m beginning to understand. Though I think you also just like to look better than everyone else, my friend.”
Celaena laughed, “I wish I could deny it.”
Nehemia grinned. “Don’t bother. It’s why I like you.”
Celaena’s heart tightened at that, her smile growing even wider.
