Review: The Pledge by Kimberly Derting

Title: The Pledge
Author: Kimberly Derting
Publisher: McElderry Books
Date Published: Nov 15, 2011

Synopsis:
In the violent country of Ludania, the classes are strictly divided by the language they speak. The smallest transgression, like looking a member of a higher class in the eye while they are speaking their native tongue, results in immediate execution. Seventeen-year-old Charlaina has always been able to understand the languages of all classes, and she's spent her life trying to hide her secret. The only place she can really be free is the drug-fueled underground clubs where people go to shake off the oppressive rules of the world they live in. It's there that she meets a beautiful and mysterious boy named Max who speaks a language she's never heard before . . . and her secret is almost exposed.

Charlie is intensely attracted to Max, even though she can't be sure where his real loyalties lie. As the emergency drills give way to real crisis and the violence escalates, it becomes clear that Charlie is the key to something much bigger: her country's only chance for freedom from the terrible power of a deadly regime

Review: The Pledge is a book that I've been wanting to get my hands on for quite some time; the synopsis stole my attention and I knew the novel would be something that would interest me. The concept of language is very complex and the idea of social rankings in a strict society with a vicious queen is tense ... so combining both language and social status made for an interesting novel that had twists and turns throughout.
I absolutely loved this book!! There was a sense of historical fiction mixed with fantasy and paranormal that made The Pledge a fun and sometimes nerve-racking read!

This dystopian novel caught my attention from the very beginning- I enjoy reading dystopian novels as they have seem to become a popular genre in YA lately! The idea that one person or group has such high control over an entire entity is astonishing- the rules and regulations as to what these people have to abide by always interests me, and sometimes even intimidating. The author, Kimberly Derting describes a society that is ran by the Queen. She is top on the hierarchy- those who are considered royal speak one language, those in a working class below them speak another language, and so on and so forth. Every "class" has a different language only they can understand... and there is a high price to pay for anyone who breaks the rules that the Royals set. These rules include talking, comprehending, or understanding a language other then your own.

The queen is in search for an heir as she is ready to pass on.. this can't be just "some" girl, she needs to be special and fit into the role to take over Ludania. There is one girl fit for the role of queen and only a few know who she is before she even realizes it.

On to the characters...
Charlie (Charlaina) has a rare gift- but one she cannot flaunt. In fact, she has to be very careful that no one ever find outs that she can understand the languages for every social class. The consequences of this slip could mean life or death. I enjoyed reading about Charlie- besides the fact she has to pretend everyday that she doesn't have a gift that could lead to her death, she's a normal teenage girl. Her love for her family and the strength she has mentally and psychically to take on all that she does is impeccable!

I enjoyed reading about Maximillion-- hot hot hot! It was mesmerizing to read about him, and at some areas I even got chills because his character was very mysterious.. but then again that's what makes girls fall for guys right? Max knows Charlies secret and he has a secret of his own. One that could ruin both of them.. or possibly save them ;-) ((being vague I know.. but I refuse to give spoilers... I want everyone to enjoy this book as much as I did.. shock, surprise, and all!)

Gripping. Exciting. Thrilling are only a few words that I would use to describe this book... especially the ending!! Towards the beginning of the book, Kimberly describes the society of Ludania in which Charlie lives and in very great detail. The rules and the way their societies run under the Queen are described and taken into account- all of these descriptions are needed, but not much of the plot is addressed yet. Towards the middle to the end everything begins to unravel and this is when I could not get enough of The Pledge.. and Max! LOL. I even started doubting what the complete outcome of this book would be I was so flustered (in a good way!) by the fast paced, jaw dropping events!

I really enjoyed this book and I would highly recommend it for anyone who likes Dystopian novels.. or just looking for a great book to read!

Book Review: Darkness Falls By Mia James

Name: Darkness Falls
Author: Mia James
Publisher: Indigo

Summary:
HIGHGATE
When April's family moved to the wealthy North London village of Highgate, she thought she'd be starting a glamorous new life-she was wrong, dead wrong. First her family was torn apart by a brutal murder, then she was attacked by a blood-thirsty monster and now her mysterious boyfriend Gabriel is dying...and it's all her fault.

MURDER
Now April is running as fast as she can to stop the killings. First she has to save Gabriel by finding a forbidden book many claim is a myth while tracking down the sinister 'Vampire Regent' she believes is behind the creepy goings on at Ravenwood school.
But April herself is in danger-she is being hunted by a desperate killer and people close to her are starting to die.

VAMPIRES
Just when April needs people to rely on, her world is turned upside down by a heartbreaking betrayal and she finds herself drawn towards the dark world of the suckers. But April has a deadly secret of her own and if the Vampires find out, the next funeral she attends.....could be her own.
Time is short, the stakes are high and surviving school has never been so tough.

Review: I totally adored By Midnight but I assumed it was a one off book.
When I found out about Darkness Falls I was excited to see what Mia James had in-store for April Dunne in the second instalment of what I now understand is the Ravenwood Mysteries.
Darkness Falls starts from where By Midnight ended and it made me feel like I had literally picked up this book straight after completing By Midnight.

Mia James' descriptive creativeness is yet again impressive and alluring. If you want to sleep shut the book otherwise you'll be tempted to keep reading.
You'd think cemeteries and creepy Vampire goings on would not make this book suitable bedtime reading yet I found I had to physically tear myself away.

How would you feel if you met the perfect guy and he wasn't what he seemed? Would you stay away or would you still be drawn to him.

There are so many unanswered questions and twists that have you on the edge of your seat.
Just like 'By Midnight' there are some similarities to Twilight, April and Gabriel are very similar to Bella and Edward.

In some scenes I feel like I want to scream out loud at April it's a good job I don't. I think my colleagues and family would think I'm crazy not to mention my fellow bus passengers. It's like the heroines in Horror films they walk into dangerous situations and you're sat on the edge of your seat saying why would you run upstairs. Yep, April has made me want to scream this at her on more than one occasion.

I adore the forbidden love story and the tension has me as a reader eager for each and every page.
There's a few characters I'm still unsure of including April's mum Silvia.
What I truly loved about this novel is that I suspected some people who didn't deserve to be questioned and I was shocked by others.
The last half of the book was so intense that I would sit there for what I thought was a few minutes, when actually an hour had past. I'd been so engrossed in the story and the twists and turns in the plot and the characters- I just couldn't put it down. I would literally have to shut the book and go to sleep, I found myself getting off buses and trains still reading.

Now, I am eager for the next chapter in April Dunne's story.

Book Review: Clockwork Prince (Inferal Devices #2) By Cassandra Clare

Name: Clockwork Prince (Inferal Devices #2)
Author: Cassandra Clare
Publisher: Walker Books
Summary: In the magical underworld of Victorian London, Tessa Gray has at last found safety with the Shadowhunters. But that safety proves fleeting when rogue forces in the Clave plot to see her protector, Charlotte, replaced as head of the Institute. If Charlotte loses her position, Tessa will be out on the street and easy prey for the mysterious Magister, who wants to use Tessa's powers for his own dark ends.

Review: Felt like you were left hanging with Clockwork Angel? Questions left un answered? You needed more? More of Will's cockiness, more of Jem's kindness and more of Tessa's amazing smart and all around bravery? Well here this novel is in all its glory. Their back! The awesome Victorian shadow hunters who had us all on the edge of our seats! And as happy and sad tears drop on pages of Clockwork prince I truly wonder how Cassandra Clare could get through writing such a heart breaking beautiful book.

I think its so descriptive and effective as you read this novel you can literally close you eyes and imagine the smells and surroundings. Cassandra has created word images so vivid that it is almost like watching a period movie. She takes you for a romp through Victorian London infested with demons and find yourself in a action packed suspenseful event that had my heart facing and excited from beginning to end. This is a book for all tastes. This skilfully craft novel contains some mysticism, mystery, intrigue, humor and romance in a neat package that is not just entertaining but challenges your mind and imagination.

Jem and Tessas relationship defiantly grows through out this novel in more ways than one. Tessa and Will are still as complicated as ever, their sexual tension, the poetry, the beautiful words shared between them was just so emotional and you just wanted everything to work out between them.  Their scenes are so beautifully written that it has you swooning through out!  Also there are some new characters in this novel I would be here all day if I talked about them all but I will say this. If you like challenging, scary, brave characters then this is the book for you.

The plot is fantastic and so orginal! Twists, turns, mysterious, haunting moments. Things you never saw coming did! I enjoyed every page from beginning to end .As soon as I opened the novel it was so haunting and exciting. It had my pulse facing, heart pounding tears rolling down my face and smiling with excitement. This book brought me in straight away and I couldn't believe how many jaw dropping moments there truly was!

Destined review, Interview with Jessie Harrell & Giveaway!!

Today we welcome Jesse Harrell author of Destined to the blog!! Below is Dark Readers review, an interview with Jessie, and a GIVEAWAY!

Title: Destined
Author: Jessie Harrell
Publisher: Mae Day Publishing
Date Published: Nov 17, 2011

Synopsis:
When Psyche receives a prophecy gone horribly wrong, she learns that even the most beautiful girl in Greece can have a hideous future. Her fate? Fall in love with the one creature even the gods fear.

As she feels herself slipping closer into the arms of the prophecy, Psyche must choose between the terrifyingly tender touch she feels almost powerless to resist and the one constant she's come to expect out of life: you cannot escape what is destined.

DR interviews Jessie Harrell- Destined Author

1. How did you get into writing... Was publishing a book something you've always dreamed of doing?
No, although I had a 6th grade teacher who thought I would grow up to be an author.  Guess she was right about that. Who knew?  I wasn't one of those students who was good at grammar (DON'T even talk to be about diagramming sentences), but I guess I can string words together well enough.  My writing really started to take off in law school and I basically write every day for my job, so I'm always practicing!

2. Were you influenced by any authors growing up?

This is going to sound terrible, I never really started paying attention to authors until I became one.  I've always enjoyed reading, and might have followed a particular author's stories if I liked them (Dean Koontz, Stephen King, etc.), but since I didn't aspire to be a novelist, the author's writing styles didn't really influence me.

The only author that particularly comes to mind is Robert Heinlein, who wrote Stranger in a Strange Land and was popular in the 1960s.  My first boyfriend gave me that book and others, which influenced me to have a more open world view (you can imagine the "freeing" type messages you get coming out of the 1960s).

3. What do you enjoy doing in spare time- apart from work and writing?

What spare time?  J/K.  No really, what spare time?  TV (aside from Trueblood) is completely out because I want to read the books written by so many other YA authors.  Apart from being a wife, mom, lawyer, author and once-a-month scrapbooker, I read or mess around online (twitter, FB and blogs).  That's pretty much my life.  I love to travel, but don't get to do it as often as I'd like since time and money ARE objects for me.

4. Explain a little about your characters- are they based on anyone in your life personally?

The characters are the gods, nymphs and nobility of ancient Greece.  The main character, Psyche, has traces of me in her - mostly her nervous habits like chewing the inside of her cheek or picking at her nails.  But she's much stronger (or at least more head strong) than I am.  The goddess, Ceres, has traces of my mom's artistic abilities and carefree spirit.  But other than that, the characters have personalities that suited them for their roles and so I couldn't base them off any one person.

5.  From what I understand, you are a fan of Greek mythology- is there a certain Greek myth that ties into Destined?

I loved Greek mythology so much that I majored in Classical Studies in undergrad.  Most of my schooling revolved around ancient Greek & Roman history and culture. I even got to take a class called Magic, Witchcraft & the Occult in ancient Greece and Rome.  But I disgress.
Destined is based off the myth of Cupid & Psyche, which I fell in love with in college.  I wanted everyone to be able to connect to an ancient story in a very modern way, so I wrote Destined.  Viola!

6. If you could be 1 character from any book of your choice- who would it be and why?

Wow - tough question! Since I just finished Daughter of Smoke and Bone, I think it'd be pretty cool to be Karou.  The world she grew up in is pretty amazing and fantastical.  And it'd be cool to be able to fly, and make wishes, and know all those languages without working at it, and be a gifted artist who's traveled the world  Yep - being her (for a little while anyway) would be pretty cool.

7. Destined is  a stand alone book- are there other projects that you are currently working on?

I have co-written a novel called Beneath the Surface with Nikki Katz and it is looking for a home.  Tag line: "A timeless love. An endless curse.  Which one will survive the summer?"
Once I get Destined fully launched this month, I will start working in earnest on my next novel, for which I have a lot of ideas just waiting for me to have time to get to.

Thanks for having me by on your blog today!
- Jessie

Christmas books

Hello all, Hayley here, I'm looking at reading some Christmas novels in December time and I thought I would see what you guys would like me to read? Casey's not keen on letting other people dictate her reading but I am interested.
I keep seeing crimbo books and I desperately want to get reading them but I do refuse to read a crimbo book until December.
I do want to read Wrapped Up In You by the lovely Carole Matthews and I have asked for Melissa Hill's crimbo read for Christmas. I have also seen that Cathy Kelly has one.

So let me know your suggestions and I will read them in order...although I am thinking Wrapped Up In You should be first???

Book Review: Beautiful Chaos by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl

Emotion and grief changes and alters all of us- we all handle difficult situations differently.

This book brought out so much of my own emotion and made me realise exactly what matters in life the people who mean the most my family and friends.

Title: Beautiful Chaos
Author: Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl
Publisher: Penguin

Summary: Ethan Wate is in love with a Caster Girl.
When he looks at Lena, It's like there's no one else in the world.
But Ethan is mortal, and on her seventeenth birthday Lena made a choice that changed everything.
The girl Ethan loves has broken the world with the supernatural powers she is struggling to control...

Now, if they are to fix the chaos Lena has caused, one of them must make a terrible sacrifice. Sometimes there isn't just one answer. Sometimes there's no going back.
And this time there won't be a happy ending.

ReviewBeautiful Chaos is the third chapter in the series.
The love between Ethan and Lena is still the same.
Link and Ridley have both changed dramatically thanks to the effects of how 'Beautiful Darkness' ended. Gatlin will never be the same and here we are...

In reading this novel it's like I'd never left it and I'm just as hooked on the characters and the plot.
Lena and Ethan have had to overcome so many twists and turns so as a reader you're on edge for anything to happen.
Ethan tries so hard to remain positive and confident that they can get through anything. But does he really believe that?
I'm not sure I like the new Link maybe he'll grow on me ha.

Woah! This novel has more twists and turns than the first two put together, each page has you on edge wondering what will happen next.

Beautiful Chaos ties up so many un-answered questions especially regarding Sarafine.
When Lena learns more about why her mother is the way she is, you are genuinely saddened and emotional.
This novel is about love, friendship and sacrificing all you have for the people that matter.

Many of the characters in this book are truly selfless for the people they love.
There are a few characters who will surprise you with the way they act.
